MITCHELL
Mitchell is situated on the Warrego Highway 600 kilometres west of Brisbane, and about 435 km from Toowoomba. The town is sited on the banks of the Maranoa River, which begins in the Carnarvon Range and flows south to join with the Balonne River. The town population is 1,100 with a total of about 2,100 in what was the Booringa Shire area.
Mitchell was named after the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell, who travelled through the region in 1846, during an expedition to find an overland route from Sydney to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
