MITCHELL Mitchell is situated on the Warrego Highway 600 kilometres west of Brisbane, and about 435 km from Toowoomba. The town is sited on the banks of the Maranoa River, which begins in the Carnarvon Range and flows south to join with the Balonne River. Mitchell is the southern entrance to the Mt Moffatt National Park Carnarvon Ranges.
The town has a sub-tropical climate with an average yearly rainfall of 525mm. Temperatures can vary from below zero in winter to 40 degrees celcius and above in summer.
The town is situated on the Great Artesian Basin, and naturally hot bore water is pumped by its bores. Tourists travel from near and far to bathe in this water, as it is said to have great therapeutic benefits.
Mitchell is part of the Maranoa Regional Council, which incorporates the previous shires of Booringa, Bungil, Bendemere, Waroo and Roma Town Council. Primary production in the region is cattle, sheep, cypress pine milling and quarry, with a small amount of crop grown in the east of the Shire.
The town population is 1,100 with a total of about 2,100 in what was the Booringa Shire area.
Mitchell was named after the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell, who travelled through the region in 1846, during an expedition to find an overland route from Sydney to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
